Edmonton Grass Roots
Race Program

Currently registered in our Race Program are three young men with different disabilities who share the same dream. All of these young men have joined the CADS – Alberta Race Team to pursue competition. This team is made up of elite racers from across the province. At this level all of the athletes have the opportunity to move up to the national team level to compete on the world stage and also compete at the 2010 Vancouver Paralympic Winter Games.

Preparation is required to assure our athletes are in the best physical condition as possible prior to the start of the ski season and throughout the duration of the program. This group meets weekly for dry land training at the University of Alberta - Steadward Centre from September to April for sport specific training. They are in the process of developing individual year round programs for each athlete to ensure optimum performance through a variety of activities. The expectation from November to April is the Edmonton team will travel to Calgary and join the Alberta race team to train primarily at Nakiska Ski Resort every second weekend. Training will focus on improving technique through free-skiing drills on different types of terrain as well by running slalom, giant slalom and super G courses set up by the Head Coach and assistants. They will also participate in training camps typically 3-4 days in duration at various mountain locations. These individuals will participate in races throughout the winter months throughout Western Canada. Here in Edmonton, each member of the team will hold a season pass to Rabbit Hill where training will take place on a weekly basis.
